SiS Xabre 600: details on rendering architecture

As indicated by our SiS Xabre 600 performance tests, this GPU features different rendering architecture than claimed by SiS: not 4 pipelines with 2 texture modules in each, but 2 pipelines with 4 texture modules in each.

This might explain Xabre’s strangely performance degradations comparing to a number of rivals. As usual, all the details will be provided in the new Xabre600 review, so stay tuned.

GS Microdrive announces 1" 2.4Gb hard drive

Today at the presentation at China International Information Technology Exhibition 2003 Chinese GS Microdrive Inc for the first time showcased its 1" 2.4Gb hard drives.

They feature Compact Flash Type II interface much resembling IBM Microdrive devices. Naturally, GS Microdrive can’t use the registered Microdrive trademark, so it has named its noveltieMagicstor. Though there are no official prices yet, 2.4Gb Magicstor is expected to cost about $230-250 ($150 wholesale.)

Having launched the production late in February, by September the company plans 150,000 units/month yield. By that moment about 1.5 million devices should be available. Initial shipments will be delivered to Taiwanese, Chinese, Korean, Singapore, and Malaysian OEMs. In May we should see these novelties in retail.

New 4200rpm hard drives feature two magnetic heads per disc, specific plate density making 30Gbit/inch², and provide 3.6 to 7.1 Mbps throughput. They require up to 250mA writing and up to 18mA in standby. Shock resistance makes 175G. According to GS Microdrive, it orders magnetic head, plates and chassises from Japanese manufacturers.

The company plans to announce 3.6Gb and 4.7Gb models by September and late 2003, respectively. Volume production is to be launched in October 2003 and early in 2004, respectively. GS Microdrive is also developing 1" embedded hard drives for mobile handsets.

Overclocker Warehouse reviews Vantec 80mm Tornado cooler

"When it comes to 80mm case fans, it´s pretty safe to say that Delta has dominated the field for some time with its superior FFB0812SHE fan (aka, the Screamer). These fans just were a must have for just about any heatsink that could fit an 80mm fan on it. Vantec, in trying to compete with Delta´s fine track record, has released the "Tornado" series of fans, an equally mean looking set of super case-fans."

Today brought confirmations for the last-month rumours about Sony’s new keyboard PDA. Operating under Palm OS 5.0, this novelty is named Clie PEG-TG50. in Japanese retail it should appear on March 15.

As supposed PEG-TG50 will occupy the middle in updated PDA line of 2003 – between high-end PEG-NZ90 and low-end PEG-SJ33. The model itself succeeds PEG-T650C, but differs by 200MHz Intel PXA250 200MHz and Palm OS Ver.5.0 instead of 66MHz Dragonball Super VZ and Palm OS 4. The novelty features keyboard embedded into the main module. Being pressed, each button is backlit for a second. The cover needed is for protective purposes only.

So, the model features 200MHz PXA250, 16Mb user RAM + 16Mb ROM, color 320x320@65Ê backlit LCD display, USB 1. and HotSync interfaces. Radeon 9800 and 9800 Pro: FIC unveils ATI´s secrets

CeBIT is at hand, so many companies post brief resumes for products to be announced that often contain interesting things. So, FIC, among briefs about Intel Canterwood-based VW11, Intel 865PE-based VL11, Intel 865G-based VL31G mobos, etc., posted detailed enough and hopefully true information about new ATI Radeon 9800 and 9800 Pro GPUs being base for FIC A98 and A98P cards.

A98 and A98P will feature 8-pipeline architechture chips, 400MHz RAMDAC, 256-bit memory bus and AGP 8X. Besides, A98 will support 128Mb DDR and 325/310MHz GPU/memory clocks; A98P will feature 256Mb DDR and 400/460MHz clocks.
