Mebius PC-RD3D – the first 3D imaging notebook

Sharp introduced the first notebook with 2D/3D display capable of producing 3D images not requiring any 3D glasses — Mebius PC-RD3D. The model will be available for sale on October 27 with MSRP of $2995.

The new 3D imaging technology bases on the so-called "parallax barrier". In the 3D mode it enables to shift image for the right and left eyes producing stereo effect. In 2D this barrier is just transparent:

The model features 2.8GHz Pentium 4, 512Mb RAM (up to 1Gb), 60Gb HDD, DVD-MULTI drive, 15" XGA LCD (1024x768), NVIDIA GeForce 4 440Go.

Other features include Ethernet controller, 56Kbps modem, 4 x USB2.0, 1 x IEEE 1394, S-Video, PC Card Type II, CF Type II, SD/MMC and Memory Stick slots.

Batteries provide 1.3 hours of operation. Sized 352x296x46-53mm, it weighs about 4.6kg.

3D imaging is also provided by TriDef Movie Player, TriDef Photo Viewer and SHARP Smart Stereo Photo Editor/Slide Show.

Intel introduces MXP5800 and MXP5400 processors for digital imaging devices

Today Intel introduced two new programmable multimedia imaging processors — MXP5800 and MXP5400 – developed together with Xerox.

MXP5800 and MXP5400 are designed for mid- and high-end digital copiers, scanners, printers, multi-purpose devices. MXP5800 features scalable array of 8 computing blocks that combine hardware accelerared data processors. MXP5400 has 4 computing blocks. Comparing to usual ASIC developed in 12 to 24 months, these novelties are programmable enabling shorter times to market for new solutions and wider application range.

Chips feature 80Kb of integrated allocation memory, hardware accelerators, 2 x 16-bit 266MHz DDR SDRAM interfaces (up to 256Mb), 2 x 18-channel DMA controllers, 32-bit 33/66MHz PCI interface. Packaged into 456-pin HFC-BGA and sized 35x35mm, chips are made using 0.13µm process.

The developer kit for Intel MXP5800 that includes the chip, PCI card, programming tools, code samples and docs will cost $2995. In over 10,000-unit quantities MXP5800 costs $68, MXP5400 – $51. Both processors will be available for sale this year-end.
