Computex 2005: Tyan, 4(8)-way servers boards for AMD Opteron

At Computex 2005 Tyan introduced its new server platform for dual-core AMD Opteron 800 processors — Thunder K8QW (S4881). The novelty is designed for 4 processors and is upgradable to 8-way variant with a special board.

Thunder K8QW (S4881):

  • 4 x AMD Opteron 800 Series (single or dual-core)
  • Upgradable to 8-way configuration with HT4881 and M4881 adapters
  • Up to 128GB registered DDR400 or 256GB registered DDR266
  • PCI Express x16, 4 lanes and 16 lanes slots
  • 2 x 100MHz PCI-X and 1 x 133MHz PCI-X slots
  • Dual Gigabit Ethernet from Broadcom
  • Integrated ATI RAGE XL
  • Integrated NVIDIA Serial ATA-II 3Gbps, RAID 0, 1, 0+1
  • Remote administration (incl. power options)

In addition to Thunder K8QW the company is planning to release 4-8-way systems — Transport VX50 (B4881) — based on Thunder K8QW:

  • 4(8) x AMD Opteron 800 Series CPUs
  • 5U (server-class tower) form-factor
  • 8 x hot-swap HDD bays, Serial ATA-II or Ultra320 SCSI
  • Slim CD-ROM and FDD
  • 930-1350W power consumption

The volume production of K8QW is scheduled to the late Q3 2005, while Transport VX50 barebone is scheduled to Q4 of the same year.

Computex 2005: VIA

This year Computex´s trend is like "dual is better than single": dual-core processors, dual-GPU graphics cards, lots of SLI solutions, CrossFire, PCI-E and AGP dual-interfaces...

VIA introduced solutions on K8T890Pro-SLI supports SLI of NVIDIA. Everything works though is not licensed yet. CrossFire is not supported on the chipset level naturally since it´s too fresh.

And PT880 Pro, in its turn, can simultaneously work with PCI-E and AGP.

Computex 2005: Albatron

Here´s a couple of interesting novelties from Albatron. The first is ATOP, a PCI-E-to-AGP adapter suitable for low-profile cards.

This solution is bulky, but works as OK. The graphics cards is based on a GF6200 GPU.

The second is the PC6600 GTQ graphics card (500MHz, 256MB DDR3). Such an ordinary product.

But this daughterboard...

...can recover this graphics card´s BIOS in case of failure. Rather exclusive, but logical since such products are popular in the motherboard segment.

Computex 2005: Foxconn

Let´s continue our virtual tour around Computex 2005.

This time we´ll visit Foxconn in their booth.

These are 10" and 7" LCD displays for portable PCs.

Samples of Foxconn´s multimedia players (one of which is manufactured for Thomson)...

...portable storage samples...

...and coolers...

...and motherboards. Note that the latter solution has 2 x Leadtek íà GeForce 6800 Ultra operating in SLI mode. PCI-Express slots are scattered so these "fat" cards have enough place to be installed.

Computex 2005: Leadtek

A couple of top-end solutions from Leadtek.

The first is WinFast PX6800 Ultra THD 512MB DDR3.

The second is a professional Quadro FX4000 SDI: PCI-E and AGP, 256MB DDR3, uncompressed video output, HD Video Processing Engine (PCI-E only).

Computex 2005: Shuttle

Of course, Shuttle introduces its "cubes". First, there´s top XPC 5035P2 on 955X + ICH7R chipset for Intel CPUs. 8-in-1 card reader, Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit 7.1 sound, 350W PSU.

A simpler and cheaper, but still very attractive XPC 5031P: integrated 945G + ICH7R, 8-in-1 reader, Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit 7.1, 350W PSU. A monitor and other peripherals indicate the way Shuttle believes a machine should be like.

Finally, a totally exclusive XPC SN26P. Based on nForce 4 SLI, 2 x GF 6800GT THD from Leadtek, 256MB DDR3 each, heatpiped cooling. Graphics cards are offered as an option.

Designed for Socket939, VIA Envy 24PT 7.1 audio, Gigabit LAN, 350W PSU (a trend already.)

A serious system cooler.

Computex 2005: TUL

Known by its long partnership with ATI, Taiwanese TUL introduces products on partner´s solutions. E.g., the Bravo X700 with 256MB DDR2 and silent heatpiped cooling.

If you still need better cooling, use this SCS2.

And, of course, CrossFire in all its glory.

2 graphics cards from TUL.

No active CrossFire though, DVI ports aren´t connected.
