NVIDIA And Hybrid To Expand 3D Infrastructure For Mobile Phones

NVIDIA announced that it is working with Hybrid Graphics to deliver a one-stop, native-accelerated 3D API stack for mobile phone manufacturers and developers.

Until now, mobile phone OEMs would typically purchase silicon and high-level software from different vendors – increasing integration time and reducing system performance. By integrating Hybrid's high-level M3G (JSR 184) solution over the optimized OpenGL ES drivers for the NVIDIA GoForce family of GPUs for wireless handsets, NVIDIA promises to provide developers with an optimized and supported 3D graphics platform.

Through this partnership, NVIDIA will expand its software development toolkit for mobile phones by integrating Hybrid’s Mobile Framework V6 - which includes support for OpenVG 1.0, an SVG (scalable vector graphics) Tiny player, and Java bindings for both OpenGL ES (JSR 239) and SVG (JSR 226).

BenQ Unveils Its Highest Contrast Ratio Home Cinema Projector

BenQ today unveiled the new PE8720 home cinema projector with the contrast ratio of 10000:1. The new projector features BenQ’s proprietary Advanced Continuous Electronic IRIS and Senseye technology, 23dB noise level, a convenient one-touch button for the best setting in any occasion and a customized 6-color setting function.

The featured Senseye technology enables the BenQ PE8720 to deliver image with a contrast ratio of 10000:1. This is made possible by the embedded Advanced Continuous Electronic IRIS and DarkChip3 DMD. The BenQ proprietary Advanced Continuous Electronic IRIS also optimizes light intensity for bright and dark scenes. The DarkChip3 DMD from Texas Instruments decreases the scattering of light and boosts image contrast for better dark scenes.

The BenQ PE8720 operates at 23dB due to side-exhaust fans and L-shaped inlet tunnels. BenQ's patented side-exhaust fans lowers the internal ambient temperature, allowing for efficient cooling, by reducing fan RPM. To further reduce projector acoustics, BenQ also adopts two L-shaped inlet tunnels equipped with a sound dampening muffler and anti-vibration material in the Color Wheel holder.

Apart from the image quality, the BenQ PE8720 makes it easier for users to adjust its settings. At the touch of one button, the BenQ PE8720’s adjusts color, lighting settings and Advanced Electronic IRIS for frequently-used home applications. In addition, the BenQ PE8720 also features a customized 6-Color Setting function which offers users a direct, independent six-color adjustment of primary (RGB) and secondary (CMY) colors. This convenient function enables the user to change color preferences without affecting the original color settings of other colors preferences.

The BenQ PE8720 is currently available on the market.

Specifications:

  • TI Darkchip3 DMD
  • Brightness: 1,000 ANSI-lumens
  • Contrast Ratio: 10,000:1
  • Input terminals: Component (BNCx5, RCAx3), S-Video, Composite (RCAx1) and HDMI (with HDCP x1)

Fujitsu Siemens Computers Introduces The New LIFEBOOK P7120 Light Notebook

Fujitsu Siemens Computers introduced an addition to its ultra-portable LIFEBOOK P Series. The new LIFEBOOK P7120 is claimed to offer battery life that lasts up to a full working day, weighs only 1.28 kg (without optical disk drive), features a modular bay, widescreen display and all necessary connectivity options. The LIFEBOOK P7120 will hit the market in November, prices starting at ˆ2,699 (in Germany, incl. VAT).

Speaking of battery life, to specifically address this, Fujitsu Siemens Computers developed an "EcoButton". This integrated software solution is called to improve power management and allow for considerably prolonged battery life: only one click is required to change all power settings without disrupting work, e.g. disabling optical disk drives and reduce display brightness. The EcoButton feature will be shared by all next-generation LIFEBOOK models. Adding a second battery to the LIFEBOOK P7120 might increase battery life up to max 11.5 hours through (depending on applications, of course.)

Equipped with LED backlights, the 15:9 display absorbs most external light and is said to have wider viewing angles than conventional notebook screens. A biometric fingerprint sensor is standard. The LIFEBOOK P7120 is tied to the Trusted Platform Module (TPM), which acts as a hardware vault for passwords and encrypted keys. The hard disk drive shock absorbers, meanwhile, reduce vibration to ensure higher data availability and prevent losses. The LIFEBOOK P7120 is also VoIP-ready and has array microphones.

Advances over the previous model:

  • Fanless technology
  • EcoButton
  • Up to 11.5 hours battery life (with two batteries; depending on applications)
  • Dedicated port replicator
  • Integrated Intel PRO/Wireless 2915a/b/g LAN and Bluetooth
  • VoIP-ready with array microphones
  • Integrated TPM module
  • Biometric fingerprint sensor
  • Ultra-slim modular bay
  • Height only 2.5 cm
  • Weight including six-cell battery reduced to 1.28 kg (without optical disk drive)
  • 10.6-inch WXGA display with Crystal View Technology and LED backlights

Agilent Launches Next-Generation DNA Microarray Manufacturing Process

Agilent Technologies announced a next-generation DNA microarray manufacturing process that increases feature density more than fourfold in 2006 and potentially greater than tenfold in 2007. This move is part of Agilent's growing push to develop microarray applications that augment traditional gene expression analysis and enable researchers to answer previously intractable biological questions.

The new microarray printing technology, a higher-performance version of Agilent's proprietary ink-jet-based in situ fabrication method, is currently producing single-array microarrays with 95,000 and 185,000 features on standard 1" x 3" glass slides. Agilent is also using the new manufacturing process to print microarrays containing eight arrays per slide. Multiple-array slides containing user-defined content enable scientists to analyze focused gene sets, biological pathways or chromosomal regions at significantly lower cost per array, using a more automated workflow. Agilent's current single-array microarrays have 44,000 features. The company's next-generation microarrays, in single- as well as multiple-array slide formats, will be available in the second quarter of 2006.

Agilent's higher-density microarrays will be available as standard catalog products as well as user-designed custom microarrays for a range of genomic applications including gene expression studies, comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), ChIP-on-chip and splice variant analysis. The high-density capability will benefit these as well as future applications by providing a more practical path to whole genome experiments.

In addition to increased feature density, the enhanced ink-jet printing provides improved spot placement accuracy and further optimized synthesis uniformity. This enables features to be synthesized closer together than on the previous generations of microarrays with minimal impact on feature size. The 95,000 and 185,000 feature microarrays are therefore compatible with existing experimental protocols without the need for Agilent customers to make further capital investment in a new scanner.
